What’s it About?

AK v/s AK is about the face-off of the hyped versions of Anil Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap with a lot of inner-layers to the story.

“The Netflix original, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, blurs the line between reality and fiction. Anil Kapoor (AK) and Anurag Kashyap (AK) play themselves and take swipes at each other in a trippy actor-director tussle.”

~ NDTV

This wasn’t something I was expecting to watch while I clicked the play button on Netflix but yeah, I was more surprised than satisfied while the end credits rolled.

I’ll rate AK v/s AK 8/10.

Plot/Story

Anil Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap, two well-known names of Bollywood are seen in a crazy battle between themselves in this movie.

When this Netflix Original starts, Anil Kapoor is seen asking the director Anurag Kashyap for a role in his movie and Anurag reacts with a blunt ‘NO’. Moments later, the duo is seen in a talk show where both ends up mocking each other about their respective profession.

The film heats up when on Anil’s birthday, Anurag emerges on his shooting set and warns him that he has kidnapped his daughter Sonam Kapoor and if he’s even half of the hero as the audience praises him to then go and save his daughter.

This warning is underlined with three conditions: No Cops, everything will be recorded in real-time and phone calls should be on speakers.

As crazy as it sounds, as Anil learns that Anurag meant no kidding about his warning, he is seen on a run to find his daughter when he is continuously captured on a camera. According to Anurag, it will be one of the best hostage thrillers ever made.

Review

Anil and Anurag are too convincing and the way this movie is made makes you wonder multiple times how they manage to pull-off certain sequences.

The crazy factor or let’s say, the psychotic touch given to the script and the characters will make you sit glued throughout the movie and the pace of the screenplay makes sure that you are not given a gap to yawn.

This movie could be better called a mockumentary where you can see a different face of Bollywood and what us, the audience, have made the so-called celebrities in their real lives.

Anil’s encounters with the public show the miserable moments an actor faces. No matter what an actor is going through, the public will never try to think from the actor’s perspective and for them, he or she is just someone to entertain them.

Final Verdict

After a lot of mostly meaningless releases, Bollywood came with something that could be praised as Good. The director’s touch can be seen clearly throughout the way till the end. I wish I can quote few sequences here but it’ll be like giving out spoilers.

Though not the best, AK vs AK will be a unique and gripping watch for everyone. I should mention the way Netflix promoted this movie though and the team utilized all the benefits provided by the online platform perfectly.
