Story

The story takes place 30 years after the events of Blade Runner(1982). A young Blade Runner embarks on a journey to find a former Blade Runner who is missing for the last 30 years.

Performances

“K”(Ryan Gosling) is a complex character. K listens to his boss and is dating an A.I. Ryan shows us that he is replicant like a clone. He establishes through his performance that he is an artificial human yet he shows emotions. Emotions that make him ask questions that lead him to embark on a journey. Ryan is so convincing as K that we don’t get bored for the whole movie, which is a little bit longer than expected.

Ana De Adams plays Joi a futuristic A.I. who creates a bond with K. It’s hard for us to believe that she’s an A.I. and not a human.

Robin Wright, who plays K’s boss Lieutenant Joshi has performed really well.

Minder Wallace (Jared Leto) doesn’t have much screen time, but he plays the perfect main villain who has objective and is ready to do what is needed to be done.

Luv (Sylvia Hoeks) is a ruthless antagonist. She is a loyal associate of Wallace. She acts as an arrow to Wallace’s bow, she will hit where Wallace is aiming.

Lastly, Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard is an integral part of the plot. Harrison has performed his character very well. It’s interesting to watch him again on screen as a former Blade Runner.

Screenplay, Direction, Editing, and Cinematography

Written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, based on the characters by Philip K. Dick. Writers have made sure that we dive into K’s world where everything is revealed to us slowly and steadily, like knowing a real person and maybe that’s the reason the movie is so long.

Denis Villeneuve knew the risk he was taking by making a Blade Runner sequel. Whenever the director touches a masterpiece for a sequel or remake expectations are always high. And he had made a better sequel. He knew perfectly if he had tried finishing the story in lesser runtime it’d have messed up the movie.

Roger Deakins has captured some beautiful visuals where we see the post-apocalyptic world. Joe Walker, editor of this movie has made sure he doesn’t rush the story to the end. His editing shows us that it’s more about the journey rather than just a destination.

My Views

I had seen Blade Runner and it has one very beautiful line “All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.” I had high expectations from the sequel like every Blade runner fan but, I have seen Denis’ movie so I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed but it was way better than my expectations. I would rate it a high 4/5.

Finally

Blade Runner 2049 runs longer for a Hollywood movie, but it’s worth every second.
