Introduction

Hi Guys. Today we’re celebrating the release of The Planet of Apes (2001). On this day the film made its first commercial screening in the cinema houses of the United States. The film had a hefty budget of $100+ million and created a well-produced masterpiece that led them to collect more than $360 million at the box office.

Let’s check the structure of the movie and diagnose it.

Iconic dialogues from this movie

Gunnar : You’re letting him go?

Captain Leo Davidson: No, he rides with us.

Limbo: Wha? Wha?

[whining]

Limbo: This is suicide!

Limbo : [after others move away]  Only a human would think riding through an army encampment could work.

Limbo: Y’know, I’d like to thank you, for opening my eyes to a brave new world of trade with humans.

Captain Leo Davidson: Yeah, no problem.

Limbo: Farewell, Spaceman!

Limbo : [immediately turns around to a group of children]  Now, who wants to buy some aspirin?

Critic Reviews

“The apes of ’68 may now appear more comical than scary but their 2001 descendants are truly terrifying.”  RTÉ (Ireland)

Plot Summary

Captain Leo Davidson is an astronaut who goes to space for an assignment. There he accidentally stumbles upon a troubled chimpanzee and tries to save him. In the attempt to save him, he falls into a planet that looks like the Earth but is ruled by talking Apes. One thing leads to another and he finds himself saving the planet with the help of a rebel chimpanzee.

Attention to detail

Before I start, I want to tell you that through this point I am not suggesting that the new Planet of Apes is not good or the CGI is bad. In fact, if we compare the newer version with the older one then the newer one will be ahead in the comparison because of the changing and improving technology, the better quality of visuals, and the evolution of screenwriting. However, the point I want to make here is that this movie (the 2001 version) did not have CGI and advanced graphic designing technology. Yet apes and the other creatures were so real-looking and natural.

You can guess the amount, quality, and accuracy of their makeup. I want to Praise the costumes and makeup team for their serious and commendable work. The director played a major role in this. After all, everything passes through the radar of the director and if anything is not quite up to the mark, he throws it away. If the planet of apes is perfect in terms of attention to detail, then it is because the director did the work of supervising the crew with absolute persistence and perfection.

The rumors are that the director was not happy with the way a film ends. So he shot 7 or 8 alternate endings for the film and chose the best 3 out of them after having very deep research, thoughts, and talking with the team. There are not many directors who can go this far with their sane mind for perfection. I have read many complaints about the ending of this film is not so good and dull. The real reason for that is out of those eight endings only 3 got released at different places according to the demographics. There is a chance that one of them isn’t quite as good as the rest of them and there is also a chance that you came across the bad one. Try the others and let me know what you think.

Acting

The second biggest plus point out of a dozen of this movie is the performances of the cast. I have already told you how heavy and tearing those makeups and outfits were. Yet the actress gave 110% in their acting performances. After thousands of retakes, wearing and removing of clothes, and heavy makeup anybody would have dozed out. The acting performance makes this film special.

After this part, they released more sequels of this movie with better graphics and better production. Those films did very great at the box office by generating more than $1.7 billion collectively. This is one of the successful film franchises of Hollywood.
