Summary
A group of friends from Manjummel, Kochi travels to Kodaikanal anticipating a fun trip. While they go on visiting tourist spots of the hill station, one of the friends reminds them of the Guna Cave, a place that got its name after Kamal Hassan shot there for his movie of the same name. Thrilled to visit the spot, they take off to Guna Cave.
On reaching the cave, they realize that entry to the actual cave is restricted as it is too dangerous to be there and a fence is built after a point on the way to the cave. The boys who are intrigued to be in the same place where Kamal Hassan was present, move past the fence breaking the security measures towards the cave. Once they reach the cave, they are thrilled and start to have fun by exploring various parts. It was then, out of the blue, one among them named Subash falls into a small hole in the cave.
Initially, the friends think he’s trying to scare them off with a tantrum but eventually, they realize Subhash fell into the hole. As it starts to rain, they find it challenging to save Subhash. As they struggle to know whether he is even alive, they learn that the cave is also called ‘The Devil’s Kitchen’ and a lot of people have lost their lives.
Will the boys be able to save Subhash and bring him back to life?
Review
Manjummel Boys shares a tale of friendship and survival making it one of the best survival thrillers to be made in India. An incident that happened in the year of 2006 is neatly adapted on-screen with Chidambaram’s tight script and screenplay. Sushin Shyam’s score gives you all the chills, tension, and goosebumps at the right places, pumping the emotional factors high throughout the movie.
But the two big names we should recall while talking about the humongous success of this movie in the box office should be of Ajayan Challishery and Ganapathi. Ajayan Chalishery did an extremely stunning work by creating a replica of Guna cave as it is for shooting the movie. The resemblance was uncanny and the texture, look, and visuals of the set created by Ajayan looked so real that we won’t be able to differentiate and point out which of the visuals are real. Erecting such a huge set of caves after taking the measurement of the real cave and pulling it off like a master was something impressive to witness.
Ganapathi deserves all the appreciation as he handled the casting process of the movie. Being one of the members of the cast himself, Ganapathi had chosen the best artist to depict the real Manjummel boys onscreen. If casting had gone wrong, the movie could have misfired big time. Soubin Shahir delivered a convincing and superb performance as well as all the others.
In short, Manjummel Boys is a must-watch in theatres with a good sound system and projection to get the best experience!
Conclusion
Don’t miss Manjummel Boys, one hell of a survival thriller by Chidambaram on big screens before it’s too late!
