One Line Review: Like Thanos once said, ‘Master’ is a movie that is ‘Perfectly Balanced’.
Master – A much-anticipated Movie!
Master was in the limelight since this project was announced for two main reasons: One, obviously because it is a ‘Thalapathy’ movie and, Two, it is directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. Due to lockdown, the movie’s release was delayed, and finally, it hit the screens on Jan 13, 2021. When people were prepared to watch a ‘Vijay Feast’, Vijay Sethupathy came out of the syllabus.
“It is the charismatic performances of Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi that keeps us rooting.”
~ Times Of India
My personal rating for Master is 7.8/10
What’s it About?
John Durairaj is an alcoholic college professor who has the love and support of college students due to his quirkiness, companionship, style, and attitude. The college management hates JD due to the same reason and is trying their best to expel him from the college.
When things go wrong during the college election, as a disciplinary action, JD is sent to a juvenile observation home as a teacher to set things right among the inhabitants there.
At the same time, a parallel tale involving Bhavani, a cold-blooded goon is shown. The movie actually starts with Bhavani’s introduction, what shapes him into what he is – a ruthless criminal, and how he uses the inhabitants of the juvenile home to cover-up for his crimes.
He is also into supplying drugs to the underaged criminals of the juvenile observation home along with the providence of free facilities to make sure that they remain under his control.
The movie is about how JD and Bhavani cross their paths and JD’s efforts to set things right while confronting Bhavani who is nothing but an epitome of cruelty.
Performances
While talking about ‘Master’ performances have to be mentioned because that is what takes this movie forward primarily.
Vijay obviously was expected to show heroism in the movie but Lokesh made sure to make everything look interesting and most importantly believable about him. The swag, style, and attitude with timely humor make the character of JD an interesting watch.
At the same time, Lokesh indeed knows that a strong Antagonist is a must when it comes to such stories. The characterization of Vijay Sethupathi is just amazing that no flaws can be seen in his part as well.
Being given equal screen space as the hero himself, Vijay Sethupathi as Bhavani shines in the movie with a brilliantly penned character, and he, at times, overshadows the Hero.
Review
The face-off between JD and Bhavani is the most interesting part of the movie. But without rushing to anything, Lokesh makes sure to build up the storyline slow but steady to give space for almost every character as demanded by the script.
Fans could enjoy Vijay’s cool steps, stylish fights, quirky gestures, and intense dialogues. The same is applied to Vijay Sethupathi as well but he comes with an extra package of bloodsheds to make people know that he is dangerous to deal with.
The rest of the characters – Malavika Mohanan, Arjun Das, etc have done a good job as required by the script. No characters are forcefully squished in and that is a relief. Anirudh’s music as always is extraordinary throughout the movie.
Verdict
The movie is a bit too lengthy. But again, no un-necessary scenes or songs are included so that can be ignored. Otherwise Master is a good movie with a decent storyline and extraordinary performances.
