#3 Veer-Zaara
Plot: Veer, an Indian Airforce officer happens to meet Zaara, a Pakistani girl who came to India to perform the last rites of her grandma. He accompanies her after saving her from an accident, all the way back to the railway station for her return. There, he learns Zaara is engaged and confesses his love to her. Knowing fate is not fair to them, he leaves. But Zaara learns gradually that she too is in love with Veer. Both of them should battle the fate and their nationalities to let their love flourish.
Review: Veer-Zaara is one of the timeless love story ever to be made and a milestone in Shah Rukh Khan’s career. Yash Chopra was able to bring the best performances out of Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta in this movie that also portrayed the communal tension between India and Pakistan effectively. The movie grabbed four Filmfare awards including one for the best actor.
#4 Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham
Plot: Rahul is an adopted son of a wealthy family. Everyone in that family knows this except for his brother Rohan. Rahul falls for Anjali and desires to marry her. But Yash, Rahul’s dad opposes the marriage as Anjali belongs to a financially deprived family. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Rahul marries Anjali and Yash disowns him. Rohan will be in a boarding school all this time. Ten years later, Rohan returns to the family. On knowing everything that happened, he starts a mission to reunite his family.
Review: Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham boasted an ensembled star cast of Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Amitabh Bachchan, Kajol, Kareena Kapoor, etc coming together. This itself made people interested in the movie. Karan Johar being a master of showing movies with all its grandeur, masterfully captured the complexity of relationships, along with setting up a reference template for upcoming Bollywood movies. The movie ended up bagging five Filmfare awards in total.

Plot: Naina is an MBA student, who lives in New York and runs an Indian restaurant. She is hated by her mother’s mother in law as she believes adopting Gia, Jennifer’s sister is the reason for her son’s death. Aman and his family comes to live as Naina’s neighbors. He slowly transforms Naina’s family into a positive state, even transforming her business to a successful one. Naina falls for Aman. Naina’s friend Rohit is in love with Naina and seeks Aman’s help. Naina will be shocked to discover Aman’s marriage photo and she slowly learns a big, dreadful mystery about Aman.

Plot: Rizwan Khan, a person with Asperger’s syndrome encounters a horrific fate during the 9/11 attacks in USA. An unfortunate accident shatters Khan’s family and since then he starts to demand justice from the president. Rizwan Khan sets up on a mission to convey a message to the president in person: ‘My Name Is Khan, and I am not a terrorist.’
Review: My Name Is Khan was a hard-hitting tale of a man who was targeted wrongly just because of the community he belonged to. Karan Johar, who is known for making grand, rom-coms, took a different approach in writing and filmmaking with MNIK. Shah Rukh Khan’s performance as an autistic man received positive criticism from people. The movie that delivered a strong message against terrorism received a Filmfare award for best actor.

Plot: Mohan is an NRI working for NASA. He travels back to India in search of Kaveriyamma, his Nanny who took care of him as he was a young boy. He ends up in a remote village of India. As he travels and understand the roots of India through the lives of villagers, Mohan realizes that almost all villages are in a bad state due to lack of basic facilities. He slowly starts to take steps to bring electricity to a village he is sent to by Kaveri Amma. As Mohan gets to know the beauty of his nation, he is frequently contacted by NASA for the completion of the project he is working on. His Nanny as well as his childhood love, Geeta repeats they cant move away from their country. Mohan must make a choice between his country or a different nation to lead his life.
Review: Swades boasts about patriotism and the importance of responsibility of a person towards his motherland. As AR Rahman joined in elevating this tale of love, terrorism and sacrifice with his amazing composition, Dil Se became one of the best movies ever to be made. Plot: Vijay, a street-criminal is approached by the cops to take the place of a renowned Don who looks exactly like him. The mission is to make Vijay act like Don, making him mingle with the gangsters and bring down his underworld. Vijay gets mixed up in a dangerous game of deception and betrayal and he should somehow make himself safe from the gangsters, getting out of the maze of impersonation.
